Go through fire and water 赴汤蹈火——源出盎格鲁撒克逊时期的中世纪判罪法（又称神裁法）：将嫌疑犯的手浸在沸水中，手无损，则定为无罪。1534年，希腊将军兼历史家色诺芬(Xenophon, 434?-355B.C.)在其《奥克诺密克斯》(Oeconomicus)一书中引用了这条成语的译文。莎士比亚在其剧本《温莎的风流娘儿们》第三幕第四场也用到这条成语。到上世纪中叶，这条成语已成为陈词滥调。[例]I would go through fire and water to find out the truth of that matter. 我愿赴汤蹈火来查明那件事的真相。

学英语不能不学西方文化。

西方文化又根植于西方的宗教。

近日看到一篇介绍西方宗教的文章，简明扼要，转给大家。

应该说，西方的文明就是宗教的文明，西方人祖先起源与游牧民族，生存条件恶劣，所以性情野蛮，因此发展到今天的文明尔雅，应该说宗教的教化作用功不可没。美国有90%的人信教，不过很多都只是过下圣诞、感恩等宗教节日，并不是真正的信徒，美国总统小布什在清华大学演讲时说过这样一句话：“Ninety percent of Americans say they are Christian" “百分之九十的美国人声称自己是基督教徒”, 实际上，美国真正恪守基督教教规的纯正基督教徒不到5%，西方主要发达国家也这个比例。

西方主要国家信仰的宗教主要是基督教和天主教，其中美国，英联邦国家比如澳大利亚，加拿大等主要信仰基督教；而一些大陆（法国、意大利）和南美国家（智利，巴西等）主要信仰天主教；基督教（Christianality）和天主教（Catholicism）实际上是一家，基督教就是从天主教分离出来的；学过历史的都知道在中世纪的欧洲，天主教是唯一的宗教，势力巨大，各国首脑的任命都要教皇点头，由于很多神职人员极其贪婪腐败，违背教义将宗教作为敛财的工具（比如兜售赎罪符等，你花几块钱买道符即可获救），激起了很多正义人士的不满，马丁.路德等揭竿而起，成立新教，废除一些天主教的腐败行径，这些人就是新教徒(protestant)；后来一个英国皇帝不顾罗马教皇反对，执意要废掉王后（某小国公主），娶自己情妇为妻，被罗马教皇开除教籍，这位皇帝自立一派，将新教定为英国国教，但这位皇帝也不是省油的灯，也没有按照新教的教规行事，这又激起一些人不满，他们成立了一个新的教派，叫清教，主张严格按照圣经行事，这些人遭到迫害，被迫逃到当时的新大陆美国，这些人就是清教徒puritan, 他们在美国生存艰难，得到当地印地安人的帮助获得丰收，后来设宴感激印地安人，这还成了感恩节的由来。现在基本上基督教就是当初跑到美国那拨人宣传的清教；主张严格按照圣经的指导行事。还有东欧国家信的也是基督教的分支叫东正教（ Orthodox Church），这又是东罗马帝国那些爷们反抗天主教搞出来的，大体跟基督教差不多； 总之，基督教由天主教分离出来，区别在与基督教更为纯正，主张严格按照圣经的记录行事。天主教也信圣经，但他们通常拜的是耶稣他妈，圣母玛利亚，也接受梵帝冈的教皇统治，他们喜欢在教堂摆上圣母和耶稣的雕像，这一点常被基督教徒所诟病，因为圣经中明确写到严禁拜偶像。还有什么经常在电影中见到的在神甫面前忏悔，单手在胸前划十字都是天主教才有的，所以以后一看到这些场景，马上就能分辨出主角信的是什么教；总之，天主教更奢华，更讲究一些仪式，而基督教更纯正一些。

宗教文化跟西方人的思维密不可分，这点是我们学习英语的人要注意的，其实，学习西方人的思维比学习语言本身更重要；比如象西方人感叹，他们都会说 My God! My Gosh! 或者 Jees! Gee! Jeepers creepers! 这些耶稣的讳称，而中国人在同等情况下都回说：我的妈呀！ 骂人的时候，西方人也要跟宗教联系起来，最常见的就是 God damn you! Go to hell! 在阿甘正传中，黑人中士表扬阿甘就说道： God damn it! Private , you are God damn gifted; you must have a god damn IQ of 160……

再补充两个 基督教徒常用的术语，一个是饭前的感恩祷告叫say grace; 在祷告完之后他们一般都会加一句 In Jesus' name，翻译为“奉耶稣之名祷告” ，基督教徒经常都会聚集在一起查经，也就是钻研分享圣经中某一句话的深刻含义和自己的切身体会，已加深自己的信仰。 基督徒通常还会每周参加聚会一两次，聚会活动包括查经，分享自身经历，并一起唱圣歌等。（from bbs）

BLACK
